Using a custom server jar

Utilizing custom server jars allows you to tailor your game server experience to your preferences, whether it’s using modified versions of existing games or running entirely custom server software. In Pterodactyl, incorporating custom server jars is a straightforward process, empowering you to create unique gaming environments for yourself and your community. This guide will walk you through the steps required to set up and use custom server jars in Pterodactyl.

Step 1: Accessing the Game Panel

You can see instructions on how to do this here.

Step 2: Accessing the ‘Files’ section

In the game panel, look for the ‘Files’ button in the sidebar. Here you can upload and manage files for your server.

Step 3: Uploading the Custom Server Jar

Once in the ‘Files’ section click the upload button and select the .jar file you want to upload onto your server. Make sure you upload this file into the root directory of your server.

Step 4: Renaming the Custom Server Jar

After uploading the custom server jar file, you need to rename it to match the naming convention expected by your server startup script. Ensure that the custom server jar file is named appropriately to replace the existing server jar file (e.g., server.jar).

Step 5: Updating Startup Settings

Next, navigate to the “Startup” tab in the sidebar.

Step 5(2): Updating Startup Settings

Update the server startup settings to reflect the name of the custom server jar file you uploaded. This typically involves modifying the “JAR file” or “Executable” field to specify the custom server jar file’s name.

Step 6: Saving Changes and Restarting Server

After updating the startup settings, save your changes and restart the server to apply the modifications. This will ensure that your server starts using the custom server jar file instead of the default one.

Step 7: Testing the Custom Server Jar

Once the server has restarted, verify that the custom server jar is being used correctly by connecting to the server and testing its functionality. If it doesn’t work, you can always revert back to your old .jar by reinstalling the server. See here on how to do this.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully set up and used a custom server jar in Pterodactyl, allowing you to create customised gaming experiences tailored to your preferences. By following these steps, you can harness the full potential of custom server software and enhance your gaming environment with unique features and modifications.
