Using SFTP to transfer files via FileZilla

Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) is a vital feature for managing files on your game server hosted through Pterodactyl. This guide will walk you through the process of connecting to your server via SFTP using an FTP client like FileZilla. With SFTP, you can securely upload, download, and manage files on your game server with ease.

Step 1: Gather Connection Information

Before you can connect to your server via SFTP, you’ll need the following information:

  • Hostname or IP address of your server
  • Username and password for SFTP access
  • Port number for SFTP (usually 22 by default)

You can get this information from your game panel, follow the instructions here on how to get into your game panel.

Once in your game panel, click the server you would like to see the sftp details for.

Once in your server overview, locate the settings icon in the sidebar.

Then you will arrive on the page where your SFTP details are.

PLEASE NOTE: The ‘Launch SFTP’ button does not work with Filezilla.

Step 2: Download and Install FileZilla

If you haven’t already, download and install FileZilla, a popular FTP client that supports SFTP connections. You can download it for free from the official FileZilla website (https://filezilla-project.org/). Follow the installation instructions provided for your operating system.

Step 3: Launch FileZilla

After installing FileZilla, launch the application to begin the setup process.

Step 4: Enter Connection Details

In FileZilla, you’ll see fields for Host, Username, Password, and Port at the top of the window. Enter the following information:

  • Host: Enter the hostname or IP address of your server.
  • Username: Enter the SFTP username provided by your server provider.
  • Password: Enter the SFTP password associated with the provided username.
  • Port: Enter the port number for SFTP which is 2022.

Step 5: Connect to Server

Once you’ve entered the connection details, click on the “Quickconnect” button or press Enter. FileZilla will attempt to establish a connection to your server using the provided credentials.

Step 6: Trust the Server’s Host Key

If you’re connecting to the server for the first time, FileZilla may prompt you to trust the server’s host key. This key ensures that you’re connecting to the correct server and not a malicious one. Review the key fingerprint and click “OK” to proceed if it matches the server you intend to connect to.

Step 7: Navigate Server Files

Once connected, you’ll see two panes in FileZilla: the left pane displays files on your local computer, while the right pane displays files on the server. Navigate through the directories on the server to access and manage your game server files as needed.

Step 8: Transfer Files

To transfer files between your local computer and the server, simply drag and drop them between the respective panes in FileZilla. You can also use the upload and download buttons in the FileZilla toolbar for file transfer operations.

Step 9: Disconnect from Server

When you’re finished with your file management tasks, click on the “Disconnect” button in FileZilla to terminate the SFTP connection to your server.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully connected to your Pterodactyl game server via SFTP using FileZilla. You can now manage your game server files securely and efficiently.
